Purpose.

Dear self,

Here I am writing an open letter to you, hopefully you can look back to this and remember why you started your journey in the first place.

Remember when you first decided to take the move to Tokyo?
Remember when you were inspired by everyone else?

I hope you remember that you are special too and you are also able to inspire others too.

Before you decided it was time to move, you always dreamed about being able to meet and converse with the two people who has always been your inspiration and power to strive.

This year, you were able to accomplish this many times. You were able to tell them how much they meant to you and I hope you can inspire others to do the same. Life is short, and time is precious.

If you have someone you miss, now is the time to put in the effort and time to see them. I promise you, you will not regret this decision.

The longer I’ve been in Tokyo, as much as the city is an international city, I find it hard to hard to connect to people. I realized that everyone’s “normal” isn’t “normal” after all. I may be just a Chinese-born Canadian aboard, but I hope I can bring value to people around me.

What kind of value?
I am not too certain as of right now, but I hope can help empower others and be a positive influence.

余裕を持っていくぜー！！

今年の漢字は『力』でした！
周りから「行動力」が高いと高評価されたり
切磋琢磨の仲間たちに支えられたり、励まし合えたりして
とんでもなく「力（パワー）」を頂きました。
お陰様で成長させていただきました。

そして、ずっと自分の名前にコンプレックスを持っていたが、
何100回の自己紹介を言い繰り返しててやっと向き合うようになりました。（笑）
一番効いたのは誰かに呼んでくれることよね（笑）

2019年は我田引水しに、
猛勉強と趣味に没頭し直感を育て行く^^
良くも悪くも頑固一徹というところがありますので

Returing “Home”

This is where I grew up.
This is where my family lives.
This is a chance for me relearn my country, and my city.

It is time to re-concept my journey

I grew up in an immigrant family of four; I was the youngest daughter. My family ambitiously left Hong Kong in the 1990s to Canada with hopes of a better living and education for my sister and “future me”. Growing up in an Asian family and in a community where Asians were the major minority group often left me wondering, “What is being Canadian?” Although I was raised in Canada, I was more culturally “Chinese.” I often found myself not understanding the “Western” culture, media, and practices. Plus, I preferred to speak in my native tongue whenever possible.

English is a language that everyone speaks here.
Cantonese feels like home. (It’s like speaking a secret language✌.)

This mindset started to change when I met more diverse people since entering university. Meeting and connecting to those who try their best to learn a language was very empowering. For me, my circle was Japanese-English language exchanges. It made me realized that I am grateful that I can speak some of the most universally spoken languages in the world.

I live a country where multiculturalism is praised, and differences are embraced.
There is no “perfect” English, and everyone’s accent brings some flavour to the language. 😊
As long as you’re trying your best, no one will make fun of you! (Unless they’re laughing WITH you at your mistake. Hahaha♡)

Toronto

Toronto, the highest populated city in Ontario, Canada. The Downtown of city Toronto. I’m “technically” not from the area, but I do make trips there often (even though it takes around 2 hours by public transit, haha). For me, I often go down to hang out with friends, and to meet new people through language exchanges! There are so many new shops and events that I haven’t been to yet, so I’m excited to experience them while I can. 😎

Aside from the legal name, I’ve been hearing young people refering the city as, “The 6ix” (popularized by Toronto Rap artist Drake — it includes 6 main areas of the Greater Toronto Area), TO, T.O (T-Dot), and 416. I’ll stick with the original name. 😂

トロント。カナダのオンタリオ州であり、最も人口の多い都市である。写真で写っている場所はダウンタウンとトロントである。

相手に分かり易くするためによく『カナダのトロント出身です』と言いますが、実際には郊外の方に住んでいます。でも、私はよく公共交通機関で片道約２時間ぐらいかけて遊びに行きます。友達とご飯を食べに行ったり言語交流会で新しい出会いに作りに行ったりしています。これからもカナダ生活を楽しもうと生きたいともいます！

最近、若者たちがトロントを付けたあだ名を耳にします。
もちろん、ニュースでよく出てくる「GTA（トロント大都市圏）」、「The 6ix (トロント出身のラップ・アーティストのDrakeさんによって一般化されたあだ名。主にGTAの６つ地域）」、「TO」、「T.O」、「T-Dot」、「４１６（電話番号のエリアコート）」と、などですね。自分はトロントのままにしますけど。😂
